Underhill Ashram is on lease from Gail Former... I'm looking forward to his lambs in April 2012! He is genetically both Gulmoget and Katmoget, so his lambs will be either Gulmogets or Katmogets. I've wanted to add Gulmoget to the flock for several years and Katmoget would be an added bonus.. He might not carry spots, but since I plan to keep a couple ewe lambs next year, and all of my ewes are spotted, I'll end up will lambs carrying spots in Gulmoget and Katmoget.

2011 Lambs & Sales List

Now relocated near Union, Michigan... The first Michigan Locksley lambs have arrived! Since I have my hands full with major renovation to my new home, all of this year's lambs are for sale. $50 non-refundable deposit will reserve a lamb- to be picked up at the time of weaning.. The parents of these lambs are my best/favorites out of raising Shetlands for 12 years (taking a couple yrs off to get re-established). I started out with a solid foundation in conformation, fiber and horns and added spotted genetics. All of these lambs carry spots if not spotted themselves. I raise smaller sized Shetlands with horned ram genetics- primarily from US (1980's Dailley import) bloodlines.. I do have a little UK bloodlines but I tend not to like the larger build and smaller horns, so all of my sheep are "domestic" US in looks. They are healthy, hardy, and great moms. My flock has been closed for at least three years now since I've been between places and finally got the sheep settled on my place this year. Locksley Fields update

Well it's September already and about time for an update! The flock is still in Missouri. There are now just 10 Shetlands, most of which are my keeper flock.. I have one sheep still for sale- details below. The keepers include seven ewes, which I've dubbed the magnificent seven, because they are my favorites after 10 years of working on spotted Shetlands... I really tried to reduce the flock as much as I could, and that seemed to be the minimum number I could come up with.. I hope to figure out a way to start the flock up again and have some lambs next spring after going "dormant" for awhile. I'm currently in town without space for sheep, but I'm working on some ideas- either a small place on land or finding a place to keep them nearby.

Well, that's about it for farm-related news.. There are still shetland fleeces available from shearing this spring, when I made a trip down to get vaccinations, etc. done. Sold wool has been updated and listings are current.

Pictured above is my original ram, Fletcher Sundance. I was very lucky to have had the chance to start my flock with this incredible little ram.. He was all of the things the I think a Shetland should be: compact size, great conformation, including a naturally short little v-shaped shetland tail, nice face and horn set, in addition to a fantastic calm disposition. I guess you could say my goal has always been to create spotted Sundances.

Llamas for sale

I haven't posted llamas on here for a long time, but we have come to the realization that to move some llamas to new homes, we need to reduce prices dramatically. We are primarily looking for good homes where they will have shelter, enough to eat (hay or grass seems to keep them in good condition, though they do enjoy llama pellets), will be shorn every spring, and be kept up to date on vaccinations.

We have a pair of males, pictured above, both intact and from excellent bloodlines. They come with ILR papers and can be stud males. Midknight, the black male, is a Silver Peru grandson as well as a LW Sante Fe grandson. Dakoda, is a grey, red and white male. His grandsire is Tocanoa's Tocaya, the 1999 National Champion.
Both males have had basic halter training. They are 5 years old. We would prefer to sell them as a pair and we only asking $475 for both.

We have another really excellent ILR registered male available. Angelino is a half Argentine male. He is proven. He has fantastic bloodlines and extremely heavy wool. We paid nearly $1000 for him, but since we have no plans to raise llamas in the near future, his price is now $600.

These lambs are the result of many years of my own breeding for good conformation, fleeces and spots. I'm very pleased with the results! Normally these lambs would not be for sale. BOTH girls come running to greet us and are used to being handled and picked up! Their dams are in my keeper flock of 7 ewes.

Moorit yuglet flecket ewe. I don't know if I've seen a more flashy moorit shetland! Her mom's half sister runs a close second. She is from one of my best spot producing lines- healthy spotted moorit twins with great conformation. Gorgeous, VERY sweet ewe. ~~$575~~ reduced: $450

Emsket yuglet sokket flecket and a white tail tip. Nice conformation. Her mom's bloodline has the most incredible long silky fleeces. This girl seems a little silky, but appears to take after her dad's shorter fleece and will likely have an intermediate fleece length. She has a dark blueish fleece, which might fade as an adult, but her mom did keep light blue color, so she might too. She carries moorit from her sire. Lamb photo update

Evangeline's ewe. This is possibly the silliest lamb I've ever had and she makes me laugh every time I visit her. Like Morgan's ewe, she loves people and follows at their heels, but makes a game of it, prancing and leaping about until you turn around and pet her. Just a little difficult to photograph :-)

Lambing Finale

Last Wednesday things were not looking good when I got to the sheep field and saw that Lumina was in labor but there was no sign of a waterbag or lamb feet. She continued to push with no progress. I've seen this once before and I ended up having to pull out dead lambs... That experience, as traumatic as it was for both myself and the poor ewe involved (who recovered fine, quickly became one of my buddies again and had problem-free twins the next year), did give me knowledge of what to look for.. I also had some hands on experience so that I was not a complete mess.
I was going to spare you the gory details, but since it might help someone, I'll include them.. I'm giving you fair warning... if you're squeamish, you can skip to the end for the photos now!.... I had just been hand shearing some llamas the day before and I had developed a blister on my right hand, which then got torn off due to more irritation from the scissors' handle.. So I had this open wound on my right hand, and that didn't seem sanitary for either of us.. I ran in to the feed store and bought some OB sleeves, which in theory seems like a great idea, but I decided that with the lack of ability to know what I'm feeling at my fingertips, I would be better off using my left hand. The major mental obstacle I encountered the first time, was that I was convinced that my hand was not going to fit in there.. but I have fairly small hands, so I'm actually better candidate for this job than even my vet. I found what felt like a nose or a hoof but it seemed to be behind a wall.. Since I was not wearing a glove, I could feel with my fingertips to discover that this was the waterbag. I was able to break it open using my fingernails (which I also would have been unable to do wearing glove). I found one hoof and nose.. So I tried pulling the lamb with just one foot forward, as this has worked before. I soon discovered that this was not going to work, the lamb was stuck and I became concerned that I was pulling two different lambs.. I went back in and followed the lamb's leg up to it's shoulder and head and found that the nose and foot were from the same lamb. I found the other foot and pulled it forward. The lamb then came out easily. It's a musket yuglet flecket ram. Lumina was great throughout the whole ordeal and readily accepted him.. Due to the trauma, I gave her a shot of penicillin, vitamin B and calcium gluconate. Both mom and son are doing great and are now out on pasture. That's it for lambing in 2009!

Evangeline had a very uneventful birth a little before 1 AM, without my help.. She produced this gorgeous little girl that was hopping around and playing within an hour of being born. She is a yuglet sokket, maybe flecket... I'm not sure yet if she's black or grey.

First lambs of 2009

Friday was an eventful day at Locksley Fields. Lambing for the year was halfway over within a matter of hours and at the end of the day, I, despite being covered in lambing goo, was not the least bit displeased with the results :-)

Pandora was the first show signs of impending labor. That morning she wouldn't come to the feeder for grain. I had resigned myself to the likelyhood that I would need to assist in most of the births this year. The ewes are all 3 year olds lambing for the first time.. plus they went into winter looking very well fed and came out of it looking equally so.. I decided to help when I saw that the lamb's little white feet and nose were sticking out, but so was his tongue. It's a good thing that Pandora and most of the others are friendly and more willing to allow me to get up close, because the last thing I want to do when I'm assisting a birth is to try to first catch a skittish laboring ewe.
I straightened the lamb's legs out, one at a time, so that the “elbows” weren't back with the shoulders.. This makes more space for a stuck lamb. He was a big guy, but eventually he made it out.

This is the most heavily spotted (most white) lamb I've had so far.. It's a moorit yuglet flecket ram. Sire: Locksfield Joaquin Dam: Locksfield Pandora

Within 2 hours of Pandora lambing, Morgance (aka Morgan), was in labor.. This lamb was exactly in exactly the same situation as Pandora's, and so I helped again. The result was a moorit yuglet flecket ewe! Morgan soon had two waterbags, which meant that another lamb was coming. When she started pushing, I discovered that the lamb's entire head was inside of the fluid-filled water bag.. I don't think I've ever had this before... I tore the bag open to free his head so that he wouldn't aspirate fluid and tried to wipe off his nose, all while just his head and feet were out. He was smaller than the other two and Morgan did fine the rest of the way. This lamb is a moorit smirslet ram. These lambs are from Locksfield Joaquin and Locksfield Morgance. New chickens

In my search locally for Marans chickens, I came across some five week old Black Copper Marans chicks for sale.. Well, these are the current "it" variety because while the other colors of Marans lay dark eggs, the Black Copper ones lay the darkest brown eggs of all... I was also intrigued by the idea of the possibility of Blue Copper, since blue, being a dilute of black, can be paired with black.. I was guessing that since the seller mentioned only getting a few blues from this hatch, I thought they wouldn't be for sale, but he let me buy a pair of Blue Copper, as well as a pair of Black Copper, plus a little Splash Copper freebee (who was smaller than the others and harder to tell what gender it was).. At first I thought it was a pullet, but now I'm relatively sure its another rooster, which is just fine- he's very cool.. Splash is like a double blue genetically, so paired with black, the splash will throw all blue chicks. They are growing fast!

Well, before the week was over I had located a trio of Ameraucanas which included 2 gorgeous blue hens... they came with a rooster also, so now the chicken numbers are even- 4 hens, 4 roosters.. I think I either need more hens, or less roosters..... The rooster seems to have a very nice disposition.. I'll keep him for now because roosters are good guardians for hens and until the Marans get bigger, he's the only one here, but he'll probably be looking for new flock later on..

What's happening at Locksley Fields?

I have been neglecting the blog for some time, due to not having much "farm time" as I've been away and occupied with other things. I'm graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in May.. The most difficult by far has been the past 7 months, but the emergence of spring has made me optimistic that it's not that far away.. I have some grand farm-related plans for my post-graduation break.. Well actually a little before that.. Day old chicks will arrive in early May! This will be the second time I've raised chicks.. they were lots of fun last time, but ended up covering the garage in white chick dust and flying out of their pen while their building was under construction. They will now have their own little "barn." The order mostly consists of Ameraucanas ("Easter Eggers") and Cuckoo Marans.. The easter eggers have been a favorite of mine because of their green and blue eggs, good laying rate and attractiveness.. Plus they aren't that large.. I've wanted Marans for several years because they lay very dark brown eggs... Unfortunately it's going to be a long wait before these chicks (who won't even be born for another 2 months) will start laying, so in the meantime I'm looking for some older chickens.. Pictured is my last Ameraucana/Easter egger rooster and a couple of my favorite hens.

The best summer news is that in early June, LAMBS are due! It's been 2 years since I had planned lambs that I was able to raise friendly, so I'm excited.. The four ewes that are set to lamb are Pandora, Morgance, Evangeline and Lumina. Expecting lots of spots! Here they are when they were lambs:

Shearing is April 5th. I would normally shear in March, but with lambing so late, there was no need and I pushed the date back a little due to heavier class workloads in the weeks of late March.

Still 14 sheep on the farm... The rams, Dante and Joaquin, in the post below are still available. May be willing to trade for a nice ram with spot genetics. Hopper is still available too.. I think Kaya's lamb may be available instead of Kaya.. I was planning to keep her in place of her mom, but she's not as friendly.

When you least expect...

First, I should update everyone on what's been happening... This summer I decided that I would finish college and would need to move back to Missouri to do so... 650 miles and a new battery later, I'm back and moved in to an apartment close to campus. My parents still have a farm about 45 miles from campus and my remaining sheep live there... Well, I received a call on Friday from my mom and she announced that I had a new sheep.. a newborn lamb! Well this was a bit surprising, as I THOUGHT that Shetlands were seasonal breeders and rarely bred in the spring. I put a ram in with the ewes after shearing due to lack of ram pasture..

Well the surprises were only beginning.... I drove to the farm Friday afternoon and checked on the new baby and mom, Hopper, and found that Kaya was also pregnant.. I then emailed my ewe buyers from this summer to inform them that there could be a chance of lambs. This morning I went out to the barn to discover that Kaya had lambed! Then... I received an email from Mary that twin lambs were born that very morning... AND may have more on the way... I have also heard from Nichol, who has another pregnant ewe.

The first and second photos are Hopper's moorit smirslet boy.. with two socks- on the same side. His face markings look just like his sire Joaquin!

Photo on the right is of Hawthorne and his twin Joaquin as lambs. Hawthorne lost a horn as a lamb and I had been unsure that the other would clear, but decided to hold off on wethering. His horn has actually moved farther away and there is a good space between his horns and head that I feel confident that he could be a breeding ram. Horns are more of a "teacup" British type, in contrast with my more typical horns. Hawthorne's sire has quite a bit of British blood. $.

As some of you know, I moved to back to Indiana last August, but the sheep remained on my parents' farm in Missouri. Last December I made a trip back to Missouri for a visit. As I approached the sheep field I wondered if the ewes would remember me after several months absence. Amazingly, when they saw and heard me, they all ran to me and I was surrounded by my 20 beautiful girls! Later I captured a couple of videos that I thought I'd share.

The Missouri farm has not yet sold, so there won't be any Locksley Fields lambs this spring... I will need to make a further reduction of the flock and will be posting the new sales list in the next day or two. This list will include many of the sheep I would like to keep, in fact they are the ones I had no intention of selling. But, as I am not currently able to be their caretaker, the best thing to do is to decrease the flock a bit more.

These days it's all about the kitty

In the absense of the flock, my animal companionship is in the shape of a cat (although some say, the personality of a dog).
Just one week before my move to Indiana, I found the most gorgeous kitten outside the local library. Inside, the staff told my that he had been out there all day. He was impossible for me to leave, because he a) was skinny and hungy and b) appeared to be exactly the type of cat I've always wanted. This is what he looked like when I brought him home:

I had thought he was half grown when I found him, but a trip to the vet revealed that he was only about 9 weeks old. Furthermore, the vet commented "this is gonna be a big cat." He ended up moving with me and has turned out the be quite an extraordinary guy. Here he is last fall looking for a name for himself and reading The Scarlett Letter:

And now, at 10 months old, he is nearly 16 lbs and has blossomed into a long haired beauty. He has a wonderful easy-going disposition and seems very smart. He likes kids and often seems to enjoy being carried around like a baby by one of them. He follows me around the house and has been known to let out a loud kitty howl if he can't find me. Here is one of my favorite photos of him leaping for a feather toy (his favorite):And the resulting exhaustion from such vigorous playing:

Need a Llama? or two?

With only two breedable female llamas, it seems that we don't actually need 6 males! We have the two handsome boys for sale.. They are from excellent bloodlines, ILR registered and heavy wooled. Both are halter trained. Nice fine wool on both boys- our llamas do not have heavy guard hair like the old "classic" style llama. I have had several comments that our llama fiber is as fine as alpaca.
Dakoda, the guy on the left, had a complete shearing this year- including his neck! Not all llamas look this good without some extra wool! He has the coolest coloring- greys, reds, and white in both paint and appy patterns, as well as the agouti markings that come with the deep red color.. His price is $600. The black male on the right is Midknight. He has great conformation and comes from well known grandsires. He is priced to sell at $450.
These two guys are not related, so they have the potential to both be used in the same herd (with great color variety). They have been pastured together since they were young, so they get along great. Price for the boys as a pair: $850.

my dilema

Hawthorne is the lamb pictured above at three weeks old. His complaint was that his headgear was just a tad too big. He is one of the nicest little rams ever to grace the Locksley Fields pastures; he has a fantastic disposition and conformation. I had hopes for him becoming a flock sire here, but unfortunately his horn tips appear to be on a collision course toward his head. So what does one do with such a creature? :-) Obviously he won't be used for breeding because horns like this aren't desirable and the horn will be trimmed so that it doesn't actually reach his skull.... Part of me wants to keep him because he's such a pet, but the other part says I need to find him a home due to the upcoming move. I suppose if anyone wanted to give this guy a really good home... At this point, all of this year's sale ewe lambs have gone to new homes, as well as all but one adult ewe. Likewise, all the sale boys have made it to their new residences, save one. I think I sent 22 sheep to new homes in about three weeks! I'm amazed- thank you to all of my buyers who have given so many of my "babies" good homes and for being very timely with arrangements.. Now I have the task of clearing out the wool in storage! I have sold most of this year's shetland wool.. I do have a few fleeces (extra vm!) free with purchase of a llama fleece. It seems that I've been so busy trying to tie up loose ends, I haven't shown much of the lambs I retained from this spring's lambing. I took a few photos recently.. Well, here are my 5 wonder-lambs:

Next to Hawthorne is his twin brother, Joaquin (wa-keen), who does have horns that will clear. The girls in the back are Myst's daughters. I had this photo of them as lambs, but never got posted:

On Tuesday, these two posed similarly for a reenactment of their lamb photo. They've grown this much in 10 weeks?!

Prices lowered on my sale boys due to impending move. Finnegan and Rosario are now $190 each. These are quality boys and I had already thought my price was low! Cheap transportation may be available for either/both along the route from southwest MO up to northern IN in early August.

Finnegan is just awesome.. I can only think that one reason he hasn't been snatched up by now is that he's plain black and the trend has been for flashier colors/markings. However, his conformation and horn genetics shouldn't be overlooked. His sire and grandsire were foundation rams for my flock and produced extraordinary offspring. Finn has a solid foundation of excellent genetics. Around people he is polite , a quality that I've always appreciated in the rams from this line.

This guy's good looks are no accident.. Below are some of Finn's relatives.. First his sire Stonewall, who had the largest horns, both in diameter and curl, that I've seen. Stoney also kept good grey body color. The other two boys are Dante, who is a cousin and Archer, who is Finn's half uncle. Lastly, Finn's grandsire (as well as Archer's sire), Fletcher Sundance, my wonderful foundation ram.

Rosario is an outstanding ram with a great disposition. I really like him, but I only have space for about 5 rams, he is related to my original lines PLUS I have already used him last fall (he has beautiful lambs!). Rosario has excellent conformation. His rear legs are about as straight as they come and his tail is short and ideal shape for shetlands. His lamb picture, showing his markings, is on the right. He sired Lumina, one of my favorite lambs this year. She's a gorgeous speckled/spotted musket with the tiniest tail and perfect conformation! I don't always get markings from her dam, and I believe Lumina is the best conformationally she's ever produced, so I think that's Rosario's influence.. Lumina's photos are below:

LocksField Finnegan.. Black 2003 Ram. Visitors are often impressed with this guy because he has not only great presence, but excellent conformation and a beautiful hornset. He also has a good disposition and loves chin scratches. He practically gives himself his dose of ivomec drench at worming time (loves the stuff). Finn's price is $250.

Update 5/14/07: A few of the lambs are reserved, so I've noted that in their listing.

Since I plan to move later this summer, most of this year's ewe lambs are for sale. Prices are lower than usuall and to make things simple, I'm just going to go with the same price for each one.. I'm going to list them here and add more photos as I get them. Ewe lambs are $200 each, including NASSA registration. A $50 deposit is required to reserve a lamb.

I'm listing them under the heading of the ram they were sired by.. I thought it might help organize the list a little and give some information on the sires.

____ The first three are sired by Minwawe Tornado, moorit smirslet ram with double coated fleece and from dark moorit genetics. He is one of my smallest rams and threw bold spotting last year :

_____ Next are 6 ewe lambs sired by SheltrgPines Jerome, moorit yuglet flecket ram with a very tight, crimpy fleece. He is a dark moorit without fading at 2 years old. His bloodlines are almost 40% UK. These lambs have not only his heavy spotting genetics and UK, but my favorite domestic lines too. Most of them have tighter, crimpy fleeces.

LocksField Braeton #S18264
Braeton is a 3 year old moorit blettet with outstanding conformation. Her rear legs are wide and straight, and her tail is a small perfect shetland type. Her parents are a couple favorites here; her sire is LocksField Crimson Archer, my favorite ram due to his calm disposition and her dam is LocksField RoseBriar, who is not only one of my best conformed ewes, she's also a sweetheart. Braeton has twin moorit ewes by SheltrgPines Jerome. They appear to have shorter fleeces like their sire and should carry his very flashy spotted markings. One has white markings around her neck and head and the other has a lightly speckled face. They are friendly. See photos below. Price for Braeton and her twin ewes is $600.

LocksField Taryn #S12568
Taryn was one of the ewes I thought I would not sell, but as the flock grows, I have to part with some that I don't want to. Her sire was the wonderful Fletcher Sundance and her dam was Fletcher Bethany. Taryn has twinned every year for me and throws some of the most darling faces. This year she has twin moorit ewes by SheltrgPines Jerome. The one pictured below on the left looks just like her mom and is a lighter color. The other, pictured on the right, is darker and looks a little more like their sire. They are very friendly, especially the lighter ewe- she tries climbing all over me and loves to be held! She's now reserved, but her twin is also very sweet. The price for Taryn and her darker ewe is $400.

LocksField Fable #S12567
Fable was one on the first ewes born here in 2001 and she has consistently lambed twins every year.. One of her adult sons is one of the best rams for all around conformation I've had. Fable is a daughter of my original ram Fletcher Sundance and first ewe Fletcher Limmerick. I have at least two other offspring of both parents, so Fable is available. She has nice conformation with straight rear legs and a tail of good shape, though medium length. She has twin boys this year by Minwawe Tornado: one black, one moorit. They are very friendly and are now wethered. The price for Fable and her twin wethers is $300.

Final Lamb Arrivals

On Thursday Salem delivered the final lambs for the year here at Locksley Fields. I had been anxious for Salem to lamb all spring since last year Salem had lambs with tangled legs. It was a terrible way to end the season- with my first internally assisted delivery in all the years I’d been raising shetlands. Things went badly, partly due to my not realizing I was trying to pull two lambs simultaneously. They didn’t make it. The fact that Salem would lamb last this year as well seemed cruel , but fortunately she didn’t need my help and gave birth all by herself. She has the sweetest black ewe lamb and a handsome moorit ram with a star on his forehead.
It was definitely a ewe year, with twice as many girls as boys. The total was 21 lambs: 14 ewes and 7 rams. However, there will be 20 lambs raised here. Long story short, I had a ewe reject a lamb at 3 days old. Perhaps I petted him after handling Salem’s lambs on Thursday and transferred an odd smell to him? She did know she had two, because once he was removed, she got upset. However, after returning the little guy, she pushed him away. I questioned whether I could adequately take care of a bottle baby this year due to the time involved (and my lack of it lately!), so, as guilty as I felt, I think I made the right decision. He has gone home with Allena and family (of Three Ring Ranch) in hopes that their ewe whose newborn lambs died would adopt him. We hope that things will work out for everyone!

Busy night lambing and.....Wow!!

Alright, I'll show you what the "wow" is all about first, and then tell the story:-) These are Myst's new spotted moorit girls!

Monday was a busy day for lambing. As I put Dawsen and her lambs into a pen, I noticed that Myst was the only ewe in the barn and by evening, it was clear that Myst was planning on giving birth. Knowing how long it sometimes takes these girls to go through the first stage of the birth process (despite what the books say, shetlands start giving us hints that they're uncomfortable in this stage!), so I went into the house and got some work done. Half past midnight I went out to the barn, turned the lights on, glanced at moms and babies, and zoomed in on Myst. I didn't even notice the obvious at first and really think I did a double take because I wasn't expecting a different ewe to be giving birth! Cachey already had water bags hanging out and was attempting to dig an enormous hole in the bedding. I really should be used to this by now, but I get anxious when I see them straining and no progress. After a trip inside to check the lambing book and some more waiting, Cachey had both lambs: one ram with giant hornbuds and one ewe, both muskets! I like the musket color and usually I don't get many of them- although this year they seem to be popping up. In the meantime, Myst had left the barn. By the time I finished with Cachey and her lambs it was 2 AM. I made the decision to sleep for an hour and check on Myst at 3, to give her more time and space in case my presence was causing a delay. When I came back to the barn at 3 AM, I saw that patience had paid off... Myst had already given birth to these two amazing girls! A moorit yuglet flecket- one of the flashiest lambs I've had- and a cute moorit yuglet sokket. Got to sleep at 4 AM... This is one tired shepherdess.

It's a duet performed by the spotty moorit boys... Aren't they cool? These are Hopper's rams and it's not too hard to see that apart from color and markings they don't look much alike! Hawthorne, the guy on the left is more typical looking for my flock.. I think his brother with the tight crimpy fleece looks more like a U.K. lamb!

This is Braeton with her twin moorit girls by Jerome. The one on the right has a nice white lion's mane :-) Need some nice moorit girls carrying spots?

I had planned to also get photos of Taryn's cute little girls, but Hopper's boys kept posing for me and I ran out of pictures.

The sun finally came out, so I had a chance to take some photos of the lambs. Above, all five of this year's Tornado lambs are pictured. The same lambs are also in the photo below. They've discovered that the logs make a nice playground.

Although officially due on Thursday, Edelweiss wouldn't come to the feed troughs when the grain was distributed Tuesday morning, so I knew something was up. She was going through the routine: pawing at the floor/bedding, sitting down, stretching out, getting back up only to start digging and repeat it all over again. At about 1 PM I went back out to check on her and she was in labor and pushing hard. She was pretty quiet though- unlike Hopper! Shetlands seem to prefer giving birth laying down and Edelweiss went so far over that she had trouble getting flipped back over when the lamb was out! I don't think she even realized it, because she walked about 6 feet with her back toward the new lamb. I ran in there, just to make sure the lamb's nose was clear, and when Edelweiss still stood at a distance (unusual for my sheep- moms always get right in there immediately) I decided to quickly make an exit and let her figure it out. For about 90 seconds, I held my breath while Edelweiss stared at the lamb. She then walked slowly to her, sniffed her head, tenatively licked her face, then decided "this lamb tastes good!" and assumed her full role as mommy :-) The newest GIRL is yet another moorit.

These are a couple of the "ladies in waiting" who have yet to lamb! Cachey, the grey ewe on the right is due next Wednesday, but Dawsen's due date is unknown.

The Spots Have Arrived!

I was hoping for a break from lambing. However, this morning when I arrived in the barn, Hopper was sitting in the lambing preparation spot looking uncomfortable. For some reason, most of the ewes choose this place to go into prelabor. Sure enough, Hopper was planning on lambing, it was just I matter of *when*. I let a few of the ewes and lambs out of their pens for the first time and played with a few lambs... Still no signs of getting closer for Hopper, so I decided to eat lunch. When I came back to the barn half an hour later, I could hear ominous moaning. Hopper was pushing and I could see a nose, but she was not making progress despite the horrible bellering. It's difficult to hear any of the sheep make such dreadful sounds, but Hopper is also one of my favorites, so I was feeling extra anxious. After a few minutes I decided I'd try to help and discovered NO feet, just the nose. I had another ewe who delivered this way two years ago and from that experience I had found that it was nearly futile to push the head back in as some of the lambing books recommended. So, (cringe), I was going to do what I could to... yes, pull him out by his head. While Hopper was pushing, I worked on getting his head out enough that I could pull.. With his head head out, I inched him forward while Hopper vocalized how not fun this was. The shoulders seemed a bit stuck, so I tried rotating him a little and also managed to get a foot forward. A few more light pulls and he was out! Hopper didn't realize what had happened at first, but as she sat down I place her newborn next to her, and she immediately began licking him. A few short minutes later, the pushing and moaning ensued. This lamb at least had one foot forward, so he was no problem to help deliver. I placed him next to his brother and their mom nuzzled and licked them both (while I pulled out my camera to sneak in some shots of the new family). These twin rams are moorit yuglet sokkets by SheltrgPines Jerome. Photo to the side is Hopper, on Saturday, before lambing. She's been huge for the past few weeks.

The count is now 4 boys and 8 girls!

Taryn had me nervous as she spent most of Saturday "thinking" about lambing and finally gave birth to these two nice little moorit girls by ShetlrgPines Jerome. They are friendly already!

I was happy to find my oldest ewe, Fletcher Limmerick with this speckled musket girl, up and nursing, when I arrived in the barn this morning. I don't currently have any musket sheep and Limmerick seemed to know just what I wanted from probably her final lambing. Although she's 11 years old, Limmerick stayed in great condition with the same care as the rest of the ewes all year. I'm sure that she could lamb another couple years, but at this point, the demands on my time are a little much to try for extra sheep care options. I think this little girl is just perfect and will likely be one of my keeper lambs this year. I know they're not that popular, but I like my greys/faders and I think the "speckled" colorations are always pretty. I happen to have a couple of grey ewes who produce lovely silky long fleeced lambs. This lamb seems to be no exception- her coat is already over 3/4 inch long, very curly and it shines! She's the first lamb from LocksField Rosario, my handsome moorit blettet ram.

When I got home, I found that LocksField Braeton had lambed. I thought, "oh another nice moorit girl" and went to the house to change into barn clothes.. When I came back out, I did a double take because there were now two lambs. Braeton looked thin enough after the first, that I thought she was done. Good thing my girls don't really need my assistance :-). The second is also a moorit ewe, with a bit more white on her head than her sister. These are some of the first SheltrgPines Jerome lambs. I can already see the difference in wool types. These two girls have shorter, tighter fleeces than most of the other lambs. First two photos are Limmerick's ewe and last is Braeton licking her girls clean.

First Lambs This Year

On Monday evening, Briar and Kaya lambed almost simultaneously- Kaya with twin moorit ewes and Briar with just one little moorit girl.This morning I went outside to find Fable with new twin rams, one moorit and one black. This concludes the arrival of all of the Tornado lambs this year. His lambs were all born within about 12 hours! As usual, the moms are doing a good job of lambing without my help and taking taking great care of their babies.

I took some photos, but due to the flash from the camera, I had difficulty getting any without glowing eyes. It's cold and rainy here, so the new families are confined to the barn.

The lamb count is now 3 girls and 2 boys. There are 9 ewes left to lamb, so stay tuned!

Mission Accomplished

I'm having fun looking at the spots that have emerged on the freshly shorn sheep, so I thought I would share some photos. First there are two shots of SheltrgPines Jerome, the moorit flecket who will be sire to half of this year's lambs. I love his color and pattern. Next, the moorit smirslet ram is Minwawe Tornado, another ram I used last fall. Tornado sired many of last year's spotted lambs.

I always feel a sense of accomplishment once shearing is finished. Today was shearing day here at Locksley Fields. The entire flock was also wormed with ivomec sheep drench and I gave everyone their yearly CD/T booster. Finished trimming hooves for all the ewes, but the rams will have to wait to get their "pedicures"- this shepherdess is too tired out. Out of 29 fleeces, 28 are still in the barn and will likely be napping places for cats overnight. I'm planning to get them all into the garage tommorow- I don't think the kitties can do much harm in one day.

To the right is Montague (also known around here as "Monty"). He is a Tornado son. He might be moiget as it seems to run in is family. Monty has a nice set of horns and will probably be a breeding ram in fall 2007.

The ewe below is Monty's twin sister Morgance. She has a unique spot pattern of an incomplete white band around her middle.

To the right is Evangeline, another one of Tornado's daughters. She was a very flashy lamb but genetically AgAa, so I knew she woud fade to grey. To my surprise, she did not completely loose her spots; they are now medium grey and still visible.

Last but absolutely not least, is my dear Pandora. She is perhaps the most perfect spotted shetland I've seen.. By perfect I mean great conformation and tail, nice fiber, and fun-loving personality. She can be a little troublemaker though, as you can see in the last photo. In the afternoon I was headed out the barn door to feed the ewes and Pandora slipped right past me, into the barn. She nosed around and examined all of the freshly shorn wool. I had my camera and snapped a shot while she looked at me as if to say "what's so funny?" Once her curiousity was satisfied, she decided she would join the other ewes.
